The last time I saw gramps driving |
When you think back as a kid in the 50's or 60's...the first thing you think...dude you're getting old! Once you're over that reality it's amazing the memories that can flood the recesses of your mind. If there's a story that I've told more often than any other from my childhood it would be the time that I spent in Iowa as a kid. Now if I'm honest...that's the best time to spend in Iowa :) Though I'm sure that there are a few Iowan's that would disagree with that!

Always a place I looked forward to... |
Anyway, 1/2 the story of going to Iowa is just that...that is...the going. Sitting shotgun or in the sleeper of my grandfather's eighteen wheeler, looking forward to time when we'll pull into the truck stop for fuel and a meal...especially 'Little America'. Four different summers from about age eight I would hop aboard his semi and head east, connecting to who knows where with the same destination of Council Bluffs or Red Oak, Iowa. Sure a big part of the thrill is being a kid. I would imagine that there are many a truck driver who'd rather be home. Perhaps my grandpa Williams might have thought just that as he drove back and forth across this US of A for some forty to fifty years.

My imagination...less the tats :) |
None-the-less, for this boy it was a for sure thrill to drive through California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, even Kansas, Wyoming, and Nebraska all the while aboard gramps eighteen wheeler. A memory that brings a smile every-time I think about it :)

I came across this song while putting this blog together. I wonder if it might have been his song. The second song is a favorite as a teen. Enjoy!
